5 Things You Must Know to Get a Website that Grows Your Business

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

Website planning webinarIs your Website like a black hole on the Internet that prospects go in to but never come out? They just disappear as quickly as they arrived.

Does your Website do nothing but suck away your time and money on design, hosting and updating…Without making you any money in new clients, opt-ins or sales?

Have you spent seemingly endless dollars or hours trying to get a Website that actually grows your business, without seeing better results?

Chances are it’s because you’re making a big mistake right out of the gate…You aren’t really clear about what your Website needs to do, be and say to be effective at growing your small business. So it isn’t designed and built to do the job.

The reality is; most entrepreneurs don’t think about their Website design and planning from a strategic sales and marketing perspective. But it really isn’t hard to increase your online response rate by as much as 300% by making a few tweaks.

It all starts with the 5 things every entrepreneur must know to get a money-making, lead-generating, list-building Website. These are things you want to know BEFORE you spend any more time or money on your site.

And I’m going to be sharing those on a FREE 20-minute Business Success Café Webinar tomorrow, Thursday, September 15th at 10:00 am Pacific.

This is really valuable info, not just a sales-pitch call. So if you’ve been trying to figure out how to make your Website work for you, reserve your spot now by going to the Business Cafe Webpage here:

Be sure to stay on the Webinar to the very end too as I’ve got some special bonuses and deals just for Business Café listeners.

Building an effective Website for your small business is a lot like building a house…

If you’re getting ready to build or remodel a house, you don’t just grab hammer and start pounding away, right? You consider your wants and needs, the purpose of the house and the rooms in it, as well as how traffic will flow from room to room.

Then you create a plan or hire someone to create one for you. Otherwise you’re likely to end up with a house you hate or that isn’t functional.

Try adding rooms or changing things willy-nilly and you end up with what I call a “remuddle”. You know, one of those houses with odd sized rooms, weird hallways and things (like fridges or heating oil tanks) stuffed into strange places. Exactly the kind of place buyers walk away from as fast as they can.

That’s why most people hire an architect to create a blueprint of the house they want before they start building. These professional understand exactly how to make a house meet your needs while staying within your budget.

Yet all too often no one (including the Web designer or developer) creates a blueprint—or site plan—before building a Website. You just get a site that, hopefully, looks nice. But it isn’t designed to meet your business needs, or the needs of your site visitors.

The result is a site that’s hard to navigate… Or a site that grows over time like that “remuddled” house into something no one can find their way around. Instead of a Website that leads the visitor on a sensible path towards signing up, calling, or buying.

The reality is, MOST small business Websites aren’t planned or designed to sell a gosh-darned thing—not you, your services, or even your products. They’re designed to look nice. Yet all too often even the best looking sites don’t make a dime (no leads, no sales, no nothing!).

That’s because making money online isn’t just about having a pretty Website.

Instead it’s about setting yourself apart from the competition and making a connection with your ideal client. Then giving them the chance to get to know, like and trust you—and sample the value you offer—so they feel confident taking action.

That requires careful thought and planning. And you can’t expect your Web person to do this for you.

You’re the business owner. You understand your goals and the wants, needs and problems of your ideal client, better than anyone else. And you also know what content you have available or can put together.

So if you want to get a Website that works the first time around, it’s up to you to know exactly what you want and need and why.

Below are seven things you should have in hand before you hire a Web designer or developer, or start building a site on your own:

  1. A description of ideal client and target market, and their wants, needs, problems and goals so your entire site can be created with them in mind
  2. A list of the top 5-10 questions prospects typically ask before doing business with you—answer them on your site and you won’t be answering them on the phone!
  3. The goal or purpose of your site and each page so you can plan it with intention and get results
  4. A site plan showing the pages you want on your site, and how they’re going to be linked and organized
  5. All of the content you want and need on the site organized by page
  6. A storyboard showing how the content is going to be organized on the page to make sure the most important info is front and center
  7. A sense of the overall look and feel you want your site to have to make the right first impression

I know this may seem like a lot of work, but it truly doesn’t have to be. And once you have this pulled together you’re going to save tons of time and money on the design/build side.

Because your designer won’t have to guess at what you want and go through endless rounds of revisions. And because you actually end up with a site that brings in revenues and does a whole lot more!

If this makes perfect sense, but you’re not sure where to start,
join me for my upcoming Website Sales Catapult virtual coaching program.

I’m going to personally walk you and a small group of entrepreneurs through this process step-by-step. You leave with everything listed above PLUS your home page copy written.

Along the way you get tons of access directly to me on the live calls and via the online forum. So you can get feedback on your work and get every questions answered. And I’ve thrown in some powerful bonuses to make the process even easier.

This program starts on 1/26, Early Bird discount ends at Midnight EST on 1/20, so pop on over here right away to get the deets and reserve your spot:

As you may already know, I am on a mission to help people get Websites that actually work to grow their businesses—without spending a fortune. I’m just sick and tired of hearing all the horror stories and watching people struggle.

So I’ve decided to do something special just for my ezine and RSS subscribers—that includes you—that won’t cost you a penny!

On my last call about Websites, during the live Q & A portion what folks really wanted was for me to look at their sites right then and there. Since I didn’t have time on that call, I’ve decided to host another call to do just that…

This Tuesday, January 25th from 10:00-11:00am Pacific Time. I’m going to hop on the phone for one full hour critiquing sites live! No lecturing. You’re going to get me personally providing you with three tips or ideas for how you can improve your site.

No need to register or sign up. I’m making this dead easy. Just show up on the call.
It’s going to be first come, first served.

So mark your calendar now, and be sure to write down these call-in details:

When: Tuesday, January 25th from 10:00-11:00am Pacific Time

Where: From any phone (though you want to be on the Web too to follow along)

Conference Dial-in Number: (218) 339-4300
Participant Access Code: 217836#

I’m really excited about helping you get a Website that actually sets you apart from the competition and makes your ideal client want to hire—or buy from—you!

“See” you on the call!

Stacy

What Happens When Someone Lands on Your Website?

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

Really…What happens when someone lands on your Website?

Do they stick around, read and end up calling, emailing, signing up, subscribing or buying?

Or, do they spend all of a couple seconds on your site then click away?

Competition on the Web these days is fierce! Millions of Websites exist already, and hundreds of thousands of new sites are added monthly. Chances are there’s more than one marketing the same thing as you.

That means if someone actually finds and lands on your site—but they don’t find what they’re looking for right away—they’re off to another site.

Because when someone lands on your site, you have just ½ a second to
grab their attention and convince them to stay…

Then maybe 4 more seconds to let them know you have
what they want—or they are GONE!

I know it sounds crazy, but it’s true…

The first time someone visits your site it takes about a half a second for them to viscerally decide if they’re going to stick around or not. After that they’ll spend a few more seconds skimming, scanning and searching for what they’re after.

You have to make it crystal clear you have what they want. Then really easy for them to find it. If you don’t people will click away from your site in a heartbeat. Because there are a million other Websites they could go to instead.

Yet even with all the competition, there’s no doubt the Web and social networking are still terrific, low cost ways to market any small business. If you do it right.

Unfortunately, most entrepreneurs are NOT doing it right. They’re trying to get a Website fast for the lowest possible price and the least amount of effort…Instead of spending the time needed to actually get an effective site.

That’s a bad idea if you’re truly trying to market and grow your business on the Web.

Just take a gander at these scary statistics from Gartner Group:

  • 85% of visitors abandon a new site due to poor design
  • 50% of Web sales are lost because visitors can’t easily find content
  • 50% of visitors leave when a site takes more than 15 seconds to load
  • 40% of repeat visits are lost because of a negative experience

In other words, people ARE clicking away without taking action.

If this is happening on your site, you’re most likely flushing more time and money down the toilet than if you’d gotten your Website designed and built right the first time.

The thing is…You don’t have to spend a lot of money to get a Website that generates leads, grows your list or even makes sales. But you do have put some thought and planning into it.

Otherwise you’re missing out on all that business you could have had if your Website was designed to do its job.

Your Website has to be organized, designed and built right
or you ARE going to lose visitors—and sales.

So what should you do?

1) Install Google Analytics or some other analytics software on your site so you can see firsthand how many people are arriving, how long they’re staying and what they’re looking at.

2) Take the time to actually set goals for your entire site, as well as for every page. Because you can’t expect a site to achieve your business goals if you don’t know what those goals are.

3) Decide who your ideal client is then plan, organize and develop your site to get their attention, connect with them, and show how you can help them solve a problem fill a need, fulfill a want or achieve a goal. (Your ideal client is more specific than your target market…This is a description of the person most willing, likely and able to buy what you’re selling).

Ready to get started, but not entirely sure where to start?

Join me for my upcoming Website Sales Catapult virtual coaching program!

I’m going to personally take you and a small group of entrepreneurs through this process step-by-step over five weeks. You walk away with a site plan, storyboards of your page layout, all your content organized by page, and your home page copy written.

Then you can either build it yourself or hire someone to build it for you—without wasting any more time or money. Or missing out on more leads and sales.

You get tons of access directly to me on the live calls and via the online forum. So you can get feedback on your work and get every questions answered. And I’ve thrown in some powerful bonuses to make the process even easier.

This program starts on Jan 26th. So if you’re determined to have Website that actually markets your services or products this year, go here now:

Seven Ways Your Website Can Grow Your Business for You

Wednesday, December 29th, 2010

I hear it all the time…Most entrepreneurs are so busy working in their business, they don’t have time to work on it. In other words, they don’t have time to do any more sales, marketing or follow up.

In a day and age where it takes far longer to get a client or make a sale than it used to, this really worries me.

Because if you don’t devote enough time and energy to growing your business, it’s going to stay just like it is right now. If you’re satisfied with that, congratulations! If not, then you need to take action and make changes.

When you’re an overworked, overwhelmed entrepreneur, the best way to do that is to turn your Website into a 24/7 salesperson. In fact, these days I’d say your Website is likely the single most important place to invest your time and marketing dollars.

Here are solid seven reasons why…

1) Powerful Introductions

Let’s face it, people don’t buy from businesses. They buy from people they know, like and trust. Unless you are selling something really inexpensive, most folks are not going to pony up their hard-earned cash without learning a bit more first.

You could let people learn more by scheduling endless phone calls, coffee meetings and free consultations.

Or, you could just send them to your Website and let it do the job for you.

2) Draw in the Crowds

Once you get the word out about your Website via social networking and other marketing—as long as you have something of value to offer and it’s designed right—new visitors are going to refer others to it.

Then your site can introduce you, and your products or services, to a wider audience in a way that weeds out the tire kickers. All without you lifting a finger. And it works whether your market is local, national or global.

Of course, you have to have an effective Website or all those new site visitors are going to disappear as fast as they showed up.

3) Make Sales Without Selling

If you hate selling, why not let your Website do it for you?

When it’s written and organized right, your Website can:

  • Set you apart from your competition
  • Explain the benefits of buying your products, services or programs
  • Answer your prospects questions
  • Address their objections
  • And convince them to take action by calling, signing up, or whipping out their credit card and buying right now!

The result? You get an email in your Inbox letting you know you made a sale or got a new subscriber. Or, if you actually end up talking to them personally, they’re seriously interested in buying from—or hiring—you. No selling needed. So you waste less time on folks who aren’t your ideal client anyway.

4) Give ‘Em a Taste

I love cheese, but I’m not one to spend more than a few bucks a pound to satisfy my dairy tooth—unless I happen to get a sampling of something really yummy. Then suddenly I can justify the higher price.

The same holds true with products and services.

Most people won’t buy something that costs more than about $75 on the Web unless they already know and trust you.

But let them sample the wares with a free report or download, then stay in touch via an ezine, and it’s a whole ‘nother story. If you give them something of value, and they like it, they’ll be way more inclined to actually buy.

And your Website can handle the whole process automatically—if you plan it out properly.

5) Build Your List

The real value in any small business is in the list. First, because when you have a list you have a group of prospects to communicate with who’ve already said they’re interested in what you do or sell.

Second, having a list allows you to build a relationship with prospects over time. So they have a chance to get to know, like and trust you. And so you’re top of mind when they are ready to buy.

And the easiest way to build this oh-so-valuable list is with your Website.

Because you may only personally meet 100 or so prospects a year. But hundreds, or even thousands, can stop by your Website each month.

Over time, if you keep offering value—and capturing their email addresses—people will go from being prospects, to clients, to raving fans. You can’t beat that with a stick!

6) Deliver the Goods

How would you like to sell a product that requires minimal development costs, no packaging, no shipping, no distribution and no employees to manage?

Your Website can be a completely automated store for selling both print and electronic products and services 24/7—without you lifting a finger once it’s set up. Easy for you. Easy for your clients and customers. Good for everyone.

7) Establish You as the Expert

The right Website can make you look like the expert you are, helping convince people to invest their hard-earned dollars with you. Not to mention helping you land speaking engagements and PR opportunities.

All you need is powerful content organized properly…Including your very own downloadable freebie that highlights your expertise, and maybe a blog. Before you know it opportunities will start knocking.

The best part is…Chances are good you just need to make a few tweaks and changes to turn your current site into a top-notch salesperson working for you 24/7. Once your Website has the right look, organization and content (and a bit of marketing behind it), it can do truly amazing things for your business.

And you don’t even have to learn how to set all this up yourself. You just have to understand what needs to be done and make a plan. Then hire someone to do the time-consuming, technical and complicated work for you.

Want to discover exactly what you need to know and do to have a Website that grows your business for you…?

Holiday Thoughts, Wishes and Ideas for Entrepreneurs

Monday, December 27th, 2010

With the end of the year in sight, it’s all too easy to get swept in planning for next year. But it’s also important to stop and take a moment to celebrate all you’ve accomplished this past year.

Small or large, every success achieved, goal met, problem solved and idea implemented deserves a moment of appreciation. Partly because you deserve a pat on the back after all your hard work, and partly because you get more of what you focus on. So it makes sense to focus on your successes.

But also because, if you always wait to celebrate until you have something big happen, you won’t have much to celebrate. Enjoy the small things in life—and in business—and everything becomes more enjoyable.

So don’t just rush through the holidays and into next year without reflecting back on everything that has gotten you to right here. Thank the people who helped and supported you. Thank the universe (or your personal god) for bringing you all the opportunities you got to take advantage of. And thank yourself for being smart enough to take advantage of them.

You are smart, driven, powerful and amazing. And you’ve done amazing things. Revel in them and get ready for even more coming your way next year!

Happy Holidays and here’s to2011 being your best year yet!!

None of us start our businesses thinking “Oh, if only I could find a way to work 60 or more hours each week. That’s all I really want to do with my life!” We start businesses looking for more freedom and fewer work hours. It just doesn’t always work out that way. Before you know it your business takes control of your life.

It happens to just about every small business owner out there…Especially solopreneurs. I know because I’ve been there myself. And because all too often I hear folks in my community say…

“I love reading about all your outdoor adventures and vacations, but frankly, I’m jealous!” In fact, I just heard them again while I was on a Business Evaluation call with a new client.

As usual those words were followed by, “How do you manage to play so much and still launch so many new products and programs and grow your business!?!”

Well, I can tell you it doesn’t just happen all on its own. Creating a business that supports your lifestyle of choice takes planning, prioritizing and dedication.

1) Planning: Because if you don’t know where you want to be, or how you’re going to get there, you could end up anywhere. And you might not be too happy with your destination—especially if it involves working 60-70 hour a week!

2) Prioritization: If you don’t organize your work around the tasks and activities that are most profitable or most important to you, they won’t get done. So you end up working all the time to try and catch up, leaving no time for what’s really important: your health, family and friends, hobbies, etc.

3) Dedication: Going from overworked and underpaid to a healthy work/life balance takes effort. You’ve spent years doing it the wrong way. Now you have to adjust your workflow and learn new habits. It takes three weeks and a bit of effort to break a habit.

You gotta be willing to stick it out and do the work. The end result is well worth it.

That’s exactly why I’ve created my Business Lifestyle Catapult virtual coaching program. Because I believe everyone deserves to have a thriving business and a fulfilling personal life. It happens to almost every entrepreneur…You start out with the best intentions. Determined to build a business that support the life and lifestyle you’ve been dreaming of.

But growing a business takes time and effort. Especially in the beginning when you don’t have a lot of cash coming in it makes sense to take on every client. And you’re bound to have a to-do list that’s always a mile long.

Before long you feel guilty if you aren’t working. With so much to do and bills to pay you have to keep working all the time. Soon you’re working every possible waking moment (including a whole lot of minutes when you really should be sleeping!).

It’s ironic, because you get so focused on building a business to support your lifestyle you aren’t even aware you’re giving up your life in the process. It’s a bit like gaining weight…

Since you only gain a few pounds a year it doesn’t seem like much. Then one day you realize you can’t fit in any of your pants anymore because you’re now twenty pounds overweight. When the heck did that happen?!?

Then it’s hard to lose the weight because you have a whole bunch of habits that are causing you to gain it. Ditto for working too much.

Once it’s become a habit to work all the time it’s hard to even imagine doing it any differently. Besides, at that point you’ve created a business that requires you to work all the time. Stop working and chances are good you’re going to stop making money too.

The thing is…If you want to be successful and happy, you have to balance your business and your life. You need time off with friends and family to recharge. You need time away to gain a fresh perspective. And you need to time to yourself to simply think, prioritize and visualize.

You can’t do any of this is you’re busy working in your business all the time. Thankfully there are a number of powerful steps you can take to start get your life back right away—while still building your business.

It’s not the graphic design—though you absolutely want your marketing took look professional and attractive.

It’s not about the brand—though this can indeed make a big difference, I’ve seen plenty of entrepreneurs with ho-hum branding land client after client.

The reality is, much of the success of any piece of marketing is determined by the copywriting, or written content. Yep. It’s the words that really do the trick!

Because it’s the words that actually speak to your prospect and convince them to take action—whether that means subscribing, registering, picking up the phone, or busting out their credit card and buying from you!

This ends up being a real problem because for entrepreneurs on a budget. Because, since most people can write, they end up writing their own marketing materials.

But there is a HUGE difference between the dry, boring, academic way most of us are taught to write in school and the way you need to write to actually make sales.

So most entrepreneurs sit down to write their Website copy, a promo email, a sales letter, an ad or whatever with no clue how to do it right. And then they end up with boring, third person corporate sounding marketing that talks all about them, their experience, their products and services and so on.

Well I hate to say it, but, your prospects don’t care one bit about any of that—at least not up front. Chances are they aren’t even going to read it.

They simply want to know that you understand their wants, needs, goals or problems and that you have a way to help. And they want to know how your products or services are going to benefit them.

Given that everyone has the attention span of a gnat these days, you’ve also got to get their attention and communicate all that in no more than a couple seconds. If you don’t, they’re gone. That’s the bad news.

The good news is…

You can learn how to turbo-charge the sales-making power of everything you write quickly and easily. And I’m going to show you four simple ways to do exactly that when I host my FREE Teleclass on the subject next week!

All you need to do is click the link below and register for the FREE call (Yes, I’ll be sending a copy of the audio recording in case you can’t make it live).

How to Keep Your Businesses Growing in Any Economy

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

Let’s face it; growing a successful business is hard. Not impossible by any means, but it sure ain’t easy. If it was, everyone would be able to do it in a flash.

But the statistics showing up to 50% of all businesses fail in the first two years make it clear that most folks aren’t making it happen. Of course, some entrepreneurs have found the formula for creating successful businesses over and over again—regardless of the economy! One of those entrepreneurs is Angela Jia Kim.

A serial entrepreneur, Angela is CEO of organic skin care company Om Aroma, an internationally-acclaimed concert pianist, and, with her husband, co-founder of Savor the Success (STS), an online community of women small business owners. Oh, and did I mention she’s a Mom too?!?

Angela is an avid social media proponent, and is well-versed in the potential for business success through blogs, tweets e-newsletters and other low- to no-cost PR and marketing tools. As a long-time STS member, I’ve watched as she’s used those very tools to keep her businesses growing in the down economy.

So this month I’ve asked Angela to be a guest on my teleseminar and share her secrets for building a business on a shoestring—in any economy—with you!

She’s going to cover:

  • How to use adversity as inspiration to keep yourself—and your business—moving forward
  • Effective, low- to no-cost networking techniques that get tremendous results
  • The right way to use social media to take your business to the next level without wasting tons of time online
  • Making the most of a shoestring budget when it comes to marketing and growing your business
  • And much more…

When: Wednesday, October 27th at Noon Pacific Time (recording available if you can’t make the live call—just register here to receive it)
Where: Via telephone from the comfort of your own home or office

Angela has shared her expertise with Cosmopolitan Magazine, More Magazine, Fox Business News, Cosmopolitan Radio, and Entrepreneur Magazine.
